Buddhist students of the Jaffna University demand for a Buddhist Vihare in front of the University

Buddhist students of the Jaffna University demand for a Buddhist Vihare in front of the University

Poster calling for a Buddhist Vihare be built in front of the University premises, has been widely pasted in the University.

In the context of Bodu Bala Sena’s Secretary, Gnanasara Thero being remanded on a contempt of court charge and a tense situation is prevailing with protest and rallies against it, poster appearing with ” We Need a Buddhist Temple – in front of  Universuty of Jaffna.” claimed to be pasted by Buddhist Students Union, had caused tension among Tamil and Muslim students.

Some Tamil students commenting on the claimed poster said, ” As the University of Jaffna is a university with Hindu Tradition, worshipping is done only in a Hindu Temple that was already inside it. Muslim  and Christian Students worship in rooms provided inside the University. They have not requested for a separate place of worship. In this context the Buddhist students asking for a place of worship in front of the University premises are not proper. This poster is an intrigue to create friction among the religions.

Already, Buddhist decorations are made around the university premises, and Poson is celebrated inviting the Army here. If a Buddhist Vihare is built in proximity to the University, The tradition of the University of Jaffna will be completely destroyed.” Other Students had called upon the University Administration, Students Federation, and Teachers Association to take note of this and act  suitably.
