Bumper harvest of red-onions but the cultivators worried by the drop in price.

Onion cultivation was undertaken in 800 hectare of land this year in Jaffna District. Although grand harvests were obtained, the drop in prices had worried us said the farmers who cultivated onions this year. In Dambulla and Colombo markets the price of onions prevailed between 45 to 55/=  per kilo. As price of onion were high during past periods, more acreage were put under Onion cultivation and bumper harvest were obtained this year.

Onions were earlier exclusively produced in the North, but now they are cultivated and the harvest were also good. Hence the northern farmers are unable to compete and market their produce in the open market.
