CM calls for Report on Land Disseisin at Kaively

The Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council, C.V.Wigneswaran asked for a report on land grabbed by the Forest Department and demarcated as the property of Forest Department at Kaively, from the District Secretary of Mulaitheevu.

Lands belonging to 25 families have been grabbed by the Forest Department.

He said in this letter that, the Forest Department has identified lands on which people lived. Those people have requested me by a letter through MPc Raviharan to take action to make them available  with their lands again.

The Forest Department has to be requested to give back the land to the people. Hence provide me  an appropriate and comprehensive report, the CM had requested.

Background

The said lands were given to families of members and Maveerars in the year 200, by the LTTE. In 2006 25 houses were constructed for the people. People displaced from there at the final stages of war. When they went back to their lands were found to occupied by the Army and the Army had put up sign boards prohibiting people from going to their land.

People returned and lived with their relatives and friends. Recently the Army had moved away from the lands, but, the Forest Department had brought the under their control. It is these lands the people had requested to be given to them.

Raviharan had inspected the area and promised the people that he will bring this matter to the attention of the CM.

It is in this context that the CM had asked for the Report from the District Secretary.
