Central Ministry of Health has agreed to provide Rs. 66 Million for two projects aimed at caring for bed-patients, said the Northern Health Minister, P.Satiyalingam. This matter was taken up with the Central Health Minister who came on a visit to North recently and he was taken to certain places directly foe inspection and subsequently he promised to provide the funds. There are more than 1,000 bed-patients created by war, accidents etc. in the North only.
We are making arrangements for monthly visits and counselling for these patients. Majority of them are in the Jaffna District. An Organization called IMHO has taken over the responsibility of caring for bed-patients in 3 Divisional areas of the 15 Divisional areas in Jaffna.
One Arulkumaran from Canada had taken over responsibility of the expenses for the team which visit and maintains the 186 bed-patients in Kilinochchi.Canadian Tamil National Council had undertaken the maintenance of 150 in Mullaitheevu. The Minister was requested take over the responsibility of caring for patients in 15 DS Divisions.
We pointed out that 6 million is needed annually and that 60 Million is needed for the provision of special toilet facilities to these patients. The minister consented to provide both and work connected to this will be commenced next month.
