1995 July 9th. In the early hours of the day the Army commenced one of their operations named “Operation Leap Forward”. Shells started exploding in all areas of Valikamam. Air Force Aircrafts screamed overhead terrorizing the people. People started displacing towards Navaly area to escape the advancing Army. The displaced people streamed into St. Peter’s Church and Sri Kathirama Murugan Temple in Navaly. Volunteers were engaged in providing food and first Aid.
All of a sudden there came three Aircrafts of the SLAF. They knew very well that these two locations are places of worship and people in these locations at that time are innocent displaced people. But they were in no mood to spare the places of worship or the innocent refugees.
Altogether 13 bombs were dropped on the hapless people. In the aftermath of the bombing 147 people including women and children were lying dead and more than 350 people groaning in pain.
The commemoration of the 147 killed in the attack was held at the memorial in side St.Peter’s Church premises by the Relatives of the killed persons. The event was presided by the current Parish Priest St.Peters Church, Rev.Fr. Roy Ferdinand. Following a requiem mass at the church the relatives lighted memorial flames and paid floral tributes.
