Commemoration of the people killed in the aerial bombing of the Sri Lankan Air Force in 1999 at Manthuvil market was held yesterday.
The photographs of 24 Tamils who were killed in this attack were placed on a special podium, the relatives lighted Memorial Lamps and paid floral tributes.
Although 18 years have passed after the occurrence of the massacre, this is the first time it has been observed on a high and sentimental note.
Coconut plants were presented to the relatives of the victim and several people from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mulaitheevu, Mannar, and Trincomalee Districts participated in this Commemoration. “There are bomb fragments in 4 places of my body. They cannot be removed. I am finding it difficult to carry out my routine activities. Although 18 years had the Government had not provided any relief.” said a person injured in the Attack.
On this day in 1999, at around 9a.m. the Government Air Force made an aerial attack on the Puthukudiyiruippu Market. 24 vendors who were vigourously engaged in their routine business were blasted to death, on the spot 56 persons were injured, more than 20 seriously.
The Commemoration was organized by the Vanni Crose Thayaga organization.
