The people of Kokkilai, Kokkuththoduwai and Karunaddukerny in Mulaitheevu District held a discussion at the Vavuniya Human Rights Commission in Vavuniya, over Sinhala people being colonized in their lands in the guise of Mahaweli Development.
Speaking to the media they said, we have been displaced in 1984, 1990 and resettled in 2012. When we attempted to undertake agriculture the Mahaweli development Authority had confiscated our lands and colonizing Sinhala people in them.
Around 1031 acre have been robbed from us by the Mahaweli Authority. Our people are in possession of deed and permits. By the acquiring of our land statutory laws had been violated. On 28th of last month we have sent memorandum through the GA. But no reply had been received.
We had this discussion with the HRC, in order to learn what further activities could be undertaken and possible legal assistance we could receive , they said.
