49 Indian fishermen were arrested by SL Navy for transgressing fishing in SL waters. There was much commotion in the sea, it was reported.
The arrested Fishermen were from Jethap Patnam and Nagappatnam areas in South India. They were arrested between 10p.m. and 2.a.m, day before yesterday.
Although, it was said that one Navy man was abducted by the Indian Fishermen, the Navy denied it. No such incident occurred, they said. During this operation one Navy man fell into the sea and the Navy had wrongly thought that they had abducted him, said the Indian fishermen. They also said that the Navy men threatened them that if the lost navy rating was not found they will not be allowed to return to shore. After searching for the missing rating they brought the fishermen and the boats to shore they said.
They were also assaulted severely, said the fishermen. Small abrasions and swellings were observable on their bodies.
They were produced through the officers of the Department of Aqua Resources before Acting Judge of Kayts and remanded for 14 days.
