Crops in 42, 000 acre has gone dry in Trincomalee

Paddy and other subsidiary crops cultivated on 42,000 acre in Trincomalee have gone dry due to the Monsoon rains have failed, said the Deputy Director of District Department Agriculture and Extension, M.Kugathasan.

90% of the high land paddy cultivation which depended solely on rain had dried up. Un-irrigated paddy cultivation was undertaken in Trincomall this year on 12 hectare and 11 hectares had gone dry. Approximately 9,000 were cultivated under small irrigation schemes had also gone dry. Other subsidiary crops like, Maize and ground nuts also are on bring of being destroyed, he said.

Although we are instructed to take up alternate crop cultivation, we are not in a position to think about that at present, said the affected farmers. They have requested that at least the government should provide us dry rations so as recover from this position in a few months.

It is notable that, all the paddy crops in Kutchchavely, Kinniya Verugal Divisonal Secretaries areas of the Trincomalee district, which are of sandy nature, had completely dried up.
