NP Education Minister Sarveswaran said that as the birth rate of Tamils had declined to 1.5 %, more children had to be given birth to compensate the loss of Tamil people in the North. He also said that if the birth rate continues like this, the future of the North will be a void.
He said so speaking as the Chief Guest at the Annual Inter House Sports Meet of Meesalai Sri Wigneswara MV, held on Friday.
1Million Tamils have migrated abroad due to war and nearly 400,000 including Poralis (Liberation Fighters) and public had been killed in it.
We have lost, particularly males within the age group of 18 – 45 which a ripe range to get children. We have lost two generations of children due to this.
The Northern Province had a Tamil population of 800,000 in 1981. At the earlier rate it should had been 1,400,000. But it is standing at just 600,000.
Compared to this, the birth rate of Muslims here is 12% while, that of Sinhalese is 5.7%. We had to increase the birth rate a little if we don’t want to be the minority in the future, he said.
