Dangerous UXOs are to be seen without being removed in the lands of people, released last week in Vali North. Further these UXOs left unattended due to the lethargy of the officials are being stolen away by scrape iron traders, the area people said.
683 acre lands which were under the control of the Army for the last 28 years, were released to the people last week. In a context where the people are speedily clearing their lands, there are several UXOs used by the Army, found un-removed in these areas. Particularly, 16mm shells and other UXOs are found dumped in tubs near the wells.
People had requested the Grama Officer, police and the Army to remove them . However they had said that there will be delay in removal of these UXOs, in view of the New Year holidays.
Although the people had seen them immediately after the hand over and requested the relevant Officials, because of the lethargy of the officials, these UXOs are being stolen away by scrape iron vendors and other parties, pointed out the people of the area. The Army spokesman Sumith Athapathu said that the Army had instructed people to inform Army of any UXO found in their lands.
