Decision taken to rehabilitate 23 of the detained 96, : D.M.Swamynathan, Minister of Resettlement and Prisons

The Attorney General Department has proposed to release 23 TPPs out of the total 96 to rehabilitation and subsequent integration into society, who are accused of small offences and taking the period of their detention and by reducing the charges against them

The AG’s Department had called the opinions of, Ministry of justice,Ministry of Law and Order, and Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms.

In the context of the TPPs in Anuradhapura going into fast unto death yesterday this announcement had been made.

A meeting was held during the latter part of last month in Colombo preseided by Rani and participated by, TNA leader Sampanthan,n Justice Minister Wijeyadasa, Law and Order Minister Sagala, and Rehabilitation Minister Swamynathan and Officials of AG’s Department. TNA insisted for total release of TPPs.

Commenting on the matter Minister Swamynathan said that, he had asked the Ag’s Department to reduce charges on23 person and to release them after 6 months rehabilitation.

However the parents of the TPPs said that, although similar lists were published twice ealier, no release was made so far.
