Decline in fishing in the North Last year

Decline in fishing in the North Last year

The information from Fisheries Department shows that fishing had declined last year, very much below the figures for 2016 and  2017.

Jaffna is one of the Districts with large number of fishing ‘Padus’. In 1983, a fish harvest of 48,677 Mt  was recorded in Jaffna District. There was a large drop during the war period. The fishing recovered to 31,476 Mt in 2016.  43,683 Mt were netted in 2017.Only 40,401 Mt  were harvested last year. The drop is due to disturbances in the sea and cyclones, which prevented going to sea last year.
