Leader of the Democratic People’s Front Mano Ganesan has observed that the delimitation cannot be done in haste. It has to eb undertaken after a proper assessment. Speaking to the media, he said:
‘There is a LG electoral law now. It was passed during the last regime. It basically proposes a mixed system of the FPTP and PR systems, 70 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. But now the talking point is thedemarcations of the new LG electoral wards or constituencies.
They are absurd. Former minister Basil Rajapaksa has created wards to suit his government’s necessities. It has fallen bad on Tamils and Muslims ethnic groups and UNP and other smaller political parties.
We cannot accept this system. So we are redoing the demarcations. Our Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) is looking at the Colombo, Nuwara-Eliya, Ratnapura, Kandy, Kegalle, Badulla, Gampaha, Kalutara, Puttalam districts now. We will submit our counter proposals. We need time. We can’t do it in haste.’
