The fishermen of Thanankilappu area have complained to the Human Right Regional Secretariat to stop the construction of saltern at Thanankilappu, in the Jaffna, Chavakachcheri Divisional Secretary’s area, by a private person.
In a context where no response had been received for their request from relevant parties, they have made this complaint.
Commenting on the matter the representatives of the fishermen said, a new private saltern is being constructed at Thanankilappu in the Divisional Secretary’s area of Chavakachcheri.
This saltern in extent of 200 acre is in close proximity to villages of Thanakilappu, Kachchai,Navatkuli, Periyamavadi, Koyilaqkkandy, Meesalai,Ketpeli, Maravanpulavu, Kilali, Pulopalai Allipalai East and Kovinthapulam. Around 500 fishermen who depend on this lagoon for their livelihood will be affected. The lagoon and the lands close by had already been salinated. The establishment of the saltern will aggravate the problem. Drinking water will become scarce.
However the HRC had said that they cannot intervene immediately and had advised to make the relevant Officials aware of the problem.
It is notable that Former Indian President and a space scientist, Abdul Kalam had recommended this area for a Space research Station.
