The 39 HNDA students who were arrested during the protest in front of the Higher Education Ministry were released on bail when they were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate a short while ago.
They held this demonstration demanding equal status with Bachelor of Commerce degree. The demonstration was organized by Students’ Collective on Thursday evening.
Later, the protestors were dispersed by the police using batons and water canons. Addressing the media after the incident, police media spokesman said today that police used only minimum force during the protest. However addressing a media conference after the incident, convener of the Inter University Students Federation Lahiru Weerasekera criticized the police action. At the same time, convener of the HNDA collective Dhammika Ruwan Kumara said police brutally assaulted the student while they were ready to protest peacefully. Former president of the University Teachers Association Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri also expressed his views about the police assault on student yesterday.
Meanwhile, demonstrations were staged by university students in several areas including Kandy, Wijerama in Nugegoda, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and opposite the Colombo University in protest over yesterday’s police attack on the students of the Higher Diploma in Accountancy. Traffic congestion was reported at Wijerama Junction in Nugegodaon the High Level Road because of the protest by students of the Sri Jayewardenepura University, police said.
