Demonstration at Düsseldorf airport demanding that refugees not be deported
Large crowds protested at the Düsseldorf airport in Germany on Tuesday against the deportation of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. The demonstration was held to demand the release of 100 refugees detained for deportation.
However, 31 of these refugees were deported to Sri Lanka. Four of them were released at the last minute.
The German government has carried out the deportation despite repeated calls from Tamil MPs including Parliamentarian and Former Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council Justice CV. Wigneswaran and Jaffna District Parliamentarian and the leader of Tamil National Peoples Front Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, not to deport the refugees as human rights abuses in Sri Lanka have escalated.
