The North and Eastern Journalists staged a demonstration in Baticaloa yesterday, the day on which Mamanithar Sivaram (Taraki) assassinated in Colombo, demanding justice for all assassinated Journalists.
Commenting on this the Baticaloa Journalists‘ Association said that in a long war environment, violence was being unleashed in several ways on Pro Tamil Nationalist Media and Tamil Journalists operating from Tamil areas. It was pursued in various forms such as murder, threats, making to disappear or assault.
In such a context we have lost 41 colleagues and continuing our struggle without justice being delivered for their losses.
The Government which rose to the throne promising to be a good governance, is now bargaining to give compensations for the Journalists who had been killed or made to disappear. It is still silently back dragging without coming in front of Tamil people to declare accountability.
At the same time for safeguarding their political interests, it has come forward to investigate the killings and made to disappear of Southern journalists. Even these investigations are being dragged on for years.
The Organization pointed out the for the first time journalists of 8 Districts of North and East had got together for this demonstration on the day of the Killing of Sivaram.
It is notable the Jaffna Press Club and other Journalist Organizations of North and East had pledged support and participated in the Demonstration.
