Dharma Dheerasinghe was re-elected chairman of the Commercial Bank at its AGM on Monday amidst concerns by shareholders on moves by the Government to replace him. Shareholder M.R. Shah, former banker and trade unionist, raised the issue at the meeting saying the Government (Treasury) should not intervene to replace the chairman.
Good governance activist, K. Vignarajah also expressed similar concerns. The Government has openly acknowledged that he wants to replace chairpersons of commercial banks saying cronies were appointed during the former regime.
