Kilinochchi District Government Agent, Suntharam Arumainayagam had said that although Agriculture and cattle breeding are found to be the main occupation of the people of the Kilinochchi District, several blockades are encountered in establishing grazing grounds. Currently, preparations are being undertaken for the Yala Season (Sirupokam) cultivation. The cultivation Committee meeting for the Yala cultivation under Piramanthanaru Tank was held yesterday.
The farmers who participated in this meeting had complained that they are being troubled by stray cattle and requested action be taken to prevent this.
Although, several attempts had been made to establish grazing grounds,several blockades had been encountered and to date it has not been established. Although 100 acre were ear marked in Kandawalai area, certain Department had said the area is within their area and had refused approval. Lack of grazing grounds is causing several problems. We will take action continuously to establish grazing grounds. As this District depend fully on agriculture, Agriculture had to be protected. Hence the cattle breeders should adhere to the instructions issued over the matter and have their cattle under control, he said.
