A Tamil Political Prisoner (TPP) who was arrested in Trincomalee in 2007, accused of attempting smuggle explosives in a fish lorry was acquitted not guilty from his case after 10 years of incarceration. Kanagaratnam Seevaratnam was the TPP who was released yesterday by the judge of the special court for cases under PTA, Justice Piyasena Ranasinghe.
He was charged with hiding 1008 Kgs. RDX Explosives in a fish lorry, in Padukkai area in Trincomalee for the purpose of causing distress to general public and the security forces. This case which was being heard in Trincomalee case was transferred to the Special court on 2015 December, by order on the AG.
The confession supposed to be given by the accused to ASP, S.L.V. Ranasinghe was main evidence submitted by the prosecution.
The Judge citing the contradictions between testimonies and rejecting the confession as involuntary and that charge had not been proved by the prosecution, acquitted the suspect as not guilty.
The witnesses were directed by State Counsel, Nayana, on behalf of the AG. Senior AAL, Ratnavel appeared on behalf of the accused assisted by AALs, Suranga Bandara and Raneetha Mayuran.
