The Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister, Justice C.V. Wigneswaran had said in America that what happened to Tamils in Sri Lanka is Genocide and it is essential that they be made available with Autonomy.
He said this while participating as the chief guest and delivering his Chief Guest’s address in the 28th annual convention of the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) held during July 2-5, 2015 at the City National Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California.
Wigneswaran who delivered his address emphasizing on Developing Tamil, Establishing Tamil and Protecting the interest of the Tamils, he said that, while the South Indian Region in India prospered after winning independence from the UK the Tamils of the North and East of Sri Lanka were subjected to Genocide.
Elaborating further, he said, “Our forefathers toiled much to emancipate the country from the UK. This happened in Bharatham. It happened in Sri Lanka. After that, the state of South Bharatham generally improved for the better. The Constitution of the country of India was greatly behind this improvement. Every unit of India was granted with sufficient authority. They were given adequate legal powers to rule themselves. South India is experiencing Artistic, Cultural and economical growth.
But the situation in North and East is not similar. We are entangled in Genocide. When I submitted a Genocide resolution in the Northern Provincial Council, My Sinhalese friends asked me how I could table such a resolution, being a man interested in Humanity and spiritualism. I replied them that only because I am a man interested in Humanity and Spirituality I was able to pass such a resolution.
I also asked them, you are speaking about Social Reconciliation, but how can we go forward in reconciliation without knowing what had happened so far? Can a person interested in humanity or spirituality accept Genocide that had happened so far?, I asked. Knowing about the truth only will pave the way for reconciliation, I told them.
You are telling only about the atrocities of the Army, You have told nothing about the atrocities committed by your youth, they asked me. I told them that it is your Army who made our youths to pick up arms. Their persecutions created this war. They took up arms because they were made to lose of faith in politics by your Army, I said.
As far as I am concerned, oppression, Compulsion or violence should be avoided as much as possible. I told them that, I want to make them aware that, as per the laws of self- defense, If these are directed against a nation, and if that nation retaliate to them, then the nation which engaged in the genocide shall bear the responsibility.
What happened in our country is a genocide. To protect the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, it is necessary that, they should be granted Autonomy. My conclusion is that, the intellectuals in both communities are beginning feel now that, a Federal basis should be included.
