The Sri Lankan General election results indicate that the United National Front (UNF) and the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) are tied neck to neck in the battle for power. With results showing that the UNF holding a small lead over UPFA at this point.
Nevertheless, in an interview to AFP, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa said today he was unlikely to lead Sri Lanka’s next government as initial results from the general election gave a slight edge to the coalition government.
However, with only one of 22 districts having declared, the shape of the next parliament remains unclear and Rajapaksa’s comments to AFP stopped short of an outright concession.
Later, in a tweet, he wrote: Mahinda Rajapaksha hasn’t yet received official final results of the election to accept victory or concede defeat.
