Potato cultivation in 90 hectare land in Jaffna District

Estimates are being made for the planting of potatoes in 90 hectares in Jaffna District. Major part of the cultivation of potatoes in Jaffna District had been undertaken in Vali East Divisional area. Out of the registered 835 potato farmers, around 600 are from Vali east, it is reported.

Atchuvely,  Punnalaikadduvan, Urumpirai, Atchelu and Urelu areas are largely cultivated with potatoes. 300 cultivators Puthur and 250 from Urumpirai had obtained seed potatoes at subsidiary prices.

Although, last year no subsidy was granted,  this year, under the National Food project of the central government, 22.4 Million rupees was allocated for the subsidy scheme.

Imported seed potatoes had been given to the cultivators. ‘Sasi’ variety from France, ‘Anova’ from Netherlands, ‘ Red light soda, from America were imported and given to cultivators. Distribution of seeds will be undertaken directly by the Jaffna District Agrarian Services Department.
