Ezhilan did not surrender to the Army: Retired Major General Chanakka Gunawardene

Retired Major General of the Sri Lankan Army, Channakka Gunawardene testified yesterday at the Mulaitheevu Magistrate Court that, the five persons, including Ezhilan, the Political Leader of the LTTE for Trincomalee District  did not surrender to the Army.

Ezhilan surrendered to the Army in the last stages of the war, on the orders of the Army was later made to disappear. The Major General said so when the Habeas Corpus filed on behalf five persons by, twelve persons including NPC Minister Ananthy Sasitharan, Krishnakumar Jeyakumary, Visvanathan Balananthiny, Kanthasamy Kanthy, Kanthasamy Ponnammah  was taken up in the Magistrate court of Mulaitheevu, yesterday.

During the final stages of the final days of the war in the year 2009, as per the Army’s announcement that the members of the LTTE and whoever had served even for one day with LTTE should surrender to them, thousands of people surrendered to the Army and were later made to disappear.

At an earlier hearing the same Major General told the court that the Army is in possession of a list of surrendered persons. But later he went back to say that only the list of rehabilitated  persons is available. Finally he had said yesterday that the name of Ezhilan and the other four had not surrendered to the Army.

However, while saying that she handed over her husband in the presence of thousands of people, Ananthy Sasitharan also said that her struggle will continue until her husband is found.
