The Senior police Superintendent of Jaffna Police has sought instructions from the Attorney General whether the fence erected around Thileepan’s Memorial in Nallur had been legally constructed? and whether a court order could be obtained to remove it.
The Jaffna Police brought this matter to the notice of the Jaffna. An iron fence has been constructed by the Jaffna Municipality around the Thileepan memorial in Nallur. On the instruction of the Senior Superintendent of Police , Jaffna Region , Police filed case in the Magistrate Court to issue an order on the JMC to remove the fence around the memorial.
When this case was taken up in the court on October 25th, the Commissioner of the JMC appeared in the Court. The President’s Council, M.A.Sumanthiran appeared in the court on behalf of the JMC Commissioner and made submissions.
MP Sivagnanam Sritharan allocated Rs.200,000/= last under the de-centralized Budget for the re-construction of the Memorial. The JMC under it decision had constructed the fence. I also had allocated Rs.200,000/= this year. The Central Government had approved our allocations. After considering the submissions court refused to issue order and postponed the case to the 29th.
The case was taken up for inquiry before Jaffna Magistrate, Sinnaththurai Sathees on the 29th . The Police informed the court that the SSP had sought instructions from Attorney General and requested that the case be adjourned grating time for the AG to provide a reply.
Hence, the case was adjourned till February 26th, next year.
