Final Results: UNP fails in forming the Government with simple majority

According to the results announced so far UNP had won 106= (93+13) seats, UPFA 95= (83 +12 ) seats, TNA 16 (14+2)  seats,  JVP 06= (04 +2) seats, SLMC 1 seat and EPDP 1 seat.

At a time when the results of certain districts, where the UNP is stronger, had not been announced fully it was presumed that, there will be a possibility of the number of seats won by UNP rising to 100, and it was greatly  expected that with the addition of National list seats, the UNP will get the strength to form the government with an adequate majority, but as per the latest situation the UNP has won  only 106 seats.

However, a National Government is to be formed honouring the agreement  made by the UNP with the President Maithripala Sirisena.

Meanwhile, the JVP had met a setback in this election. Compared to the 7 seat it won last time, it had won only 6 seats this time. At the same time the TNA which was highly speculated to meet a minor setback in this election had won a grand 14 seat victory.
