Fisheries Ministry takes action to encourage Sea Algae cultivation in the North

The Ministry of Fisheries has announced that it is intending to take action to give continuous training in the North for cultivating Sea Algae and through that to increase the income level of the people. The Ministry is taking several actions to encourage cultivation of Sea Algae in the North. It is providing training in this foreign exchange earning venture, on a district basis.

As a first step, training has been provided in 3 districts with the aid of the Ministry of re-settlement. These trainings are being  provided at a cost of 5.5 Million at Chulipuram, Chankanaiand Thellipalaiin Jaffna District, IN Poonakary in Kilinochchi District, Musaly and Nanattan in Mannar District.

Areas with parallel level, shallow and with less waves are needed for this venture. Hence The training is not given in Mulaitheevu. Sea Algae is useful in medicine  and cosmetic sectors. Hayley establishment has come forward to purchase Sea Algae in the NP.

Harvesting could be done in 45 days. The training and equipment needed are provided free of charge. Those who have completed the training could independently purchase seeds and launch their venture, said the announcement.
