Floods in South…Drought in the North 440,531 people of 130,243 families affected

The Disaster Management Centre has announced that while the south and the west are experiencing flood due to heavy rain, extended drought is prevailing in the North.

440,531 people belonging to 130,243 families were affected by the extended drought that is prevailing in the North, it is said.

115,020 in Mulaitheevu and 121,057 in Jaffna districts are affected by this drought with large number of people affected in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mannar districts.

14,748 in Musaly DS Division in Mannar have been affected by the drought.

Speaking in a media conference held at the District Secretariat, yesterday, Jaffna District Secretary, N.Vethanayagan said that, rain fall last year was not adequate. Because of this our District has been affected badly. Kayts,Velanai, Karainagar and Maruthankerny are the worst affected. We have undertaken water supply to affected areas in the Island sector. With the assistance  of Disaster Management Centre, 6 water bowsers were received and are used in the water supply. The cost of fuel and salaries of drivers are also borne by the Disaster Management Centre.
