Tension is prevailing in Thigana- Theltheniya areas in Kandy following the quarrel among two groups transforming into a riot. Following tensions between Sinhala and Muslim societies, Muslims are attacked and a curfew had been imposed immediately in the area.
On 22nd of last month, a lorry driver was attacked by a group which came in a Three-wheeler. The scene of him being attacked was recorded by a CCTV camera of the shop near the spot. The attacked person succumbed to his injuries while being treated in Theltheniya Base Hospital on Sunday. His funeral was held in Ampalai of Theltheniya.
4 persons had been arrested over the attack, produced in court and remanded till tomorrow. Hanging on this incident some area people had behaved in a riotous way in which several shops were torched. 24 persons were arrested so far in connection with the incidents.
However some people had again disturbed peace in the area. Police had fired tear gas to control them. A curfew had been imposed in the area till today morning.
The presence of controversial Buddhist monks Gnanasara Thero and Batticaloa Mangalaramaya chief Monk, Sumanaratne Thero in the trouble spot had been reported.
