Karaichchi Divisional Secretary, T. Muhunthan has said that the Forest Department is blocking the granting of lands under Aanaivilunthan Kulam to the area people.
Continuous requests had been placed to make the 410 families in Aanaivilunthan Kulam Village coming under Kilinochchi/Karaichchi Divisional Secretary area, with their lands.
Last April, a decision was taken in the DDC meeting, to grant 413 acre lands under Aanaivilunthan Kulam to the people there at 1 acre per family. The Karaichchi Divisional Secretary was given the responsibility of implementing the said decision.
However in the sitting of the DDC on the last 29th, the Divisional Secretary had indicated that the Forest Department is blocking the grant of lands to the people.
The Forest Department had informed in writing that they will release only around 70 acre in which cultivation is undertaken now and other lands could not be released as they are found to thickly forested areas.
However, as per the report of the Grama Officer, the lands under Aanaivilunthan Kulam had been surveyed and irrigation infra structures were constructed in the area even before the colonization of Vannerikulam and are still found in the area claimed to be thickly forested area by the Forest Department. The area was overgrown by forest due to the war situation in the country. The Forest Department is posing blocks for granting the lands to are people, he further said.
