As Kilinochchi / Vannerikuam has dried up completely, the fishermen who were engaged in fresh water fishing in it has been affected without employment.
More than 115 farmers are engaged in cultivation in 346 acre land under Vannerikulam, considered to be one of the large irrigation Tanks of the Kilinochchi District. Around 30 families who were living in the neighboring areas are engaged in fresh water fishing as their livelihood.
Due to the drought that prevailed after the Sirupokam, the water level of the Tank receded speedily and at present the tank has dried up. This has completely affected the fresh water fishing. The tanks in the neighborhood, such as Kariyalai Nagapaduvan and Pallavarayankaddu Tanks also have gone dry.
In the context of the tanks being dried the fresh water fishing undertaken in them are completely affected.
