On behalf of the Tamil people, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones to COVID-19 pandemic and to the families of workers who sacrificed their lives in the front line to protect others. We also express our gratitude to numerous front line and other workers, national and international organizations, and governments who are toiling day and night to overcome this pandemic which is threatening the very existence and wellbeing of humankind.
The month of May, every year, brings to fore deep sorrow and continuing disappointment in the minds of Tamil people. As each year passes on, without justice to the victims of Tamil Genocide that had been committed on the Tamil people, living in the island of Sri Lanka, from the time of colonial independence in 1948 to the current continuing structural genocide, we collectively feel abandoned. The world had seen the height of genocidal crimes in the month of May 2009 being perpetrated on the Tamil people amounting to several thousands of killings and injuries.
Even though living under the shadow of death, during this COVID-19 pandemic, Tamil people firmly reiterate their resolve to carry forward their endeavours and struggles to bring to justice the perpetrators of Tamil Genocide and bring closure to the yearnings of victims of genocide. We take this opportunity to urge the global community, governments, and organizations to support and assist the Tamil people in their quest for justice.
The Tamil people have been commemorating 18th day of May, every year as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day from 2009. In order to commemorate the eleventh anniversary, we urge all, to pause and take a moment to light a candle or a lamp on the 18th May at 18 hours 18 minutes (6.18 pm) in their homes or workplaces to honour and remember the victims of Tamil Genocide.
The following Tamil political parties from North-East Sri-Lanka and Tamil organizations around the world have pledged their support to the “Light a Candle on May 18th 18:18 (6.18 pm)” campaign.
