The Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prasath Kariyawasagam had said yesterday that the Sri Lankan Government will investigate the charges made that torture is still being perpetrated on the Sri Lanka Tamils.
The Associated Press had published a research report day before yesterday, with the testimonies of 52 Sri Lankan Tamils, who were tortured during the Maithri – Ranil regime.
Commenting on this report, Kariyawasam said that, the Sri Lanka Government strongly condemns any torture. It will be ensured that, Investigations will be held on the charges on the torture alleged to have occurred in the country and the perpetrators being brought before the law, he said.
The cooperation and assistance of all relevant factions including those outside the country is needed for this. Evidences are important for inquiries. Firm actions had been taken after this government had come to power to encourage reconciliation, Good Governance, Rule of Law and Human Rights and to prevent tortures. The Sri Lankan Government will neither accept nor tolerate any type of torture.
The bilateral stake holders, and International Organizations had to help the Sri Lankan Government by pooling in their experiences, advises and Technical Assistance, to eliminate completely all tortures and to bring the perpetrators to book, he said.
