A great demand has been observed abroad for Thenmaradchchi coconut. Around 5,000 coconuts are being purchased from markets in Chavakachcheri and Kodikamam, and taken away in vehicles for export. Producers are benefited by this. But it has been pointed out that the local consumers are forced to buy at increased prices.
Normally a coconut is sold between Rs.50 – 90. But when the coconuts are brought the markets exporters of coconut will come there and buy off coconuts at high prices fill then in bags and take them away in heavy vehicles. Because of this, local vendors are unable to purchase coconuts.
Earlier coconuts were exported from the south. The prices have increased there. Hence the demand for the local coconuts. Great demand are prevailing abroad, and people abroad are asking to send coconuts from Thenmaradchchi.
Annually, during the months from May to October the prices of coconuts will decrease. When the monsoons set in the prices of coconuts will start to increase. By October they will come to Rs.40/=. When monsoon wind started blowing, large number of coconuts were brought to the market, but as the coconuts are exported abroad, the price of coconuts increasing on a daily basis.
Although the increase in price of the coconuts have pleasured the local producers urban consumers have been affected badly, it was reported.
