All Ceylon Hindu Congress has expressed serious concern over the alleged directives by the Department of Archaeology restraining the Trustees of the Koneswaram Temple from undertaking legitimate construction work in the temple lands to perform their religious rituals in the prescribed manner.
A joint statement issued by the ACHC with the signatures of President Kandiah Neelakandan and General Secretary Muthiah Kathirkamanathan, states: Thirukoneswaram has been a sacred and historic Hindu shrine since time immemorial. It is hailed and sought after by the Hindua all over the world as one of the five venerated Siva Shrines. Any unfair, illegitimate and discriminatory directive can hurt the sentiments of the Hindus.
Therefore, we urge the Department of Archaeology to act within the ambit of its purview without putting spokes in the wheel in the efforts of the Temple authorities to develop the temple and conduct poojas and rituals as required by the religion.’
