The Textile Industry in the North which was in a stagnated state for more than 35 years is to be revived, and action is to be taken to develop this industry.
The shortages of Raw materials and the lack of marketing facilities for the end products had made several persons to abandon this industry and seek employment elsewhere.
Hand-loom equipment are found inside buildings at several places.
In this context the Industrial Department has commenced collecting data on Hand Loom Industry with the conjunction of the Divisional Secretariats. The District secretariat has instructed the Divisional Secretariats to collect primary data through Grama Officers, and to collect secondary data through questionnaire through Statistical Officers and Development Officers.
Large amounts of textiles were produced earlier using Hand – Looms and mechanized looms. However after imported textiles flooded the Market, hand woven clothes lost their demand and could not be marketed, said former producers of Hand-loom clothes.
