The Deputy Director of Agrarian Services Department, Vavuniya, E.Vijayakumar said that, around 610 acres of agricultural lands were damaged by the heavy rains that prevailed during last month in Vavuniya.
Paddy cultivation is undertaken under 580 tanks out of more than 820 tanks in Vavuniya District. Due to the rain more 300 tanks had spilled. This spilling had damaged nearly 610 acre. However the farmers had replanted the damaged crops.
Details of damages had been collected and sent to the Ministry and Department. Although the danger of breaching of tanks was there, we have handled them constructively with the aid of 10,000 poly sacs he said.
Thus, we have prevented the breaching of the Tanks in Vavuniya District with timely action, he further said.
