The Northern Governor has ordered to identify the owners of the Muhathuwaram area in Mulaitheevu, in order to provide housing to the transgressing southern fishermen there.
Karaithuraipattu Divisional Secretary had been ordered to publish news paper advertisements, calling for any prior owners of the lands now (forcefully) occupied by southern fishermen, to forward their claims with relevant documents within one month.
In the meeting held yesterday at the Governor’s Secretariat, the Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, M.C.L Fernando insisted that these land should be acquired and distributed among the southern fishermen now occupying them.
However the Karaithuraipattu Divisional Secretary, S.Kunapalan had firmly said that he has no authority to acquire private lands and distribute them some other persons.
Following this, it has been instructed to post notices calling the prior owners to field claim for the land within one month.
The Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, M.C.L Fernando further said that the same Divisional Secretary is hindering further houses being given to the Sinhala Fishermen. The said land should be acquired and given to Sinhala people, he said.
The Divisional Secretary in reply had said, that, a court case is in progress regarding granting land to construct wadies. Let the court declare it s decision on these matters.
The Northern officer of the National Housing Authority said that, within his limitations and laws, no house could be granted for lands without legal owner.
