High Court Issues interim injunction on constructing Vihare at Kanniya

Trincomalee High Court Judge M.Ilancheliyan has proclaimed an interim injunction on constructing Vihare at Kanniya. He also has banned Archaeology Department from undertaking excavations there.

An appeal was made at the High Court by Kanniya Pillaiyar Temple and Mariamman Temple administrations.

The hearing of this appeal was taken up before High Court Judge M.Ilancheliyan yesterday. AALs M.A.Sumanthiran and Kesavan Sayanthan appeared for the plaintiffs.

After hearing the submissions of the AALs the court issued several orders.

  1. Construction of Buddhist Vihare on the ruins of the Hindu temple at Kanniya should be stopped immediately.
  2. Devotees cannot be prevented from worshiping at the Pillaiyar and Mariamman temple premises and no fees could be charged from devotees for worshiping.
