Highest Sentence in the History of High Court – Triple hanging to Atchuvely Triple murder accused

The accused in the Atchuvely Triple murder case of the Jaffna High Court, Ponnampalam Thanancheyan was condemned to triple hanging for causing death to three persons and to 14 years RI and 20,000/= fine for injuring two and was ordered to pay compensation of 200,000/= by the High Court Judge M. Ilancheliyan who commented that this is the highest ever sentence in the history of the High Court.

Ponnambalam Thanancheyan of Urelu, Jaffna was charged in the High Courts in 2016, on five counts of causing the death of his mother in law, Natkunananthan Arulnayagi, sister in law Yasotharan Mathusa and brother in law, Natkunananthan Subaskaran and attempted murder of Thanancheyam Tharmika and Thankavel Yasotharan.

Following the court being satisfied that accusations had been proved beyond any doubt sentenced the accused as above.

During the trial of this case, State AAL Nagaratnam Nishanth appeaed on behalf of the prosecution while, AsAL. Thirukumaran and K.Ranjithkumar appearing for the accused and the AsAL, N.Partheeban and V. Kowthaman appeared for looking after the interests of the affected witnesses.
