Medical Officer in Charge of Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, Vavuniya, K.Chandrakumar said that the HIV infection is on the increase in Vavuniya mainly due to Prostitution. So far 20 have been infected and 13 have died of the diseases, he further said.
He said so, in a press conference held yesterday at the Prevention of Sexual diseases unit at the Vavuniya Hospital.
World Aids Day is observed on the 1st December. Thus it is observed in Sri Lanka, with a theme of “Assuring an AIDS _ Less Sri Lanka by 2025 by everyone assuring that he is free from AIDS now”
Relevant to this the Vavuniya unit is undertaking an AIDS Awareness project. 20 AIDS patients have been identified in Vavuniya from 2003 with one patient identified in 2018.There are only 7 survivors who had survived by taking drugs continuously.
The HIV Virus spreads through three ways:
- Having sexual intercourse with AIDS infected persons.
- By AIDS infected blood of persons being transfused to another person
- AIDS transferred from mother to child.
As far as Vavuniya is concerned, AIDS is spread mainly through Prostitution, he said. It takes about 3 months to identify infection and within that time the diseases is transferred to several persons. he further said.
