Hundreds of thousands of dead fish are floating around the confluence area in Vaduvagal. Hundreds of thousands of fish drifted to shore on day before yesterday and yesterday, said the area fishermen of the area. Vadduvagal Fishermen Cooperative society members are burying the dead in pits dig along the shore.

The area fishermen also said that in 2015 also hundreds of thousands of dead fish drifted ashore.

The salinity of the sea water increasing abnormally is the caused this disaster. More than 1,000 fishermen had lost their livelihood.

“More than thousand fishermen are depending on resourceful Nanthikadal for their livelihood.

We are unable to undertake fishing. We asked the officers several times to dredge the Nanthikadal to no avail. Nobody took notice of our request. They made some studies but nothing happened. If rains come we will be saved. Up to then our livelihood will be greatly affected. This disaster would have happened in dredging had been done”, said A.Shanmugalingam, the president of the Nanthikadal Management Group.

However, the District Secretary, Mulaitheevu, Rupa Ketheeswaran, when contacted said, “The Environment Authorities had said that deepening Nanthikadal will affect the environment. Only some cleaning to removes stones and other garbage”.
