The Indian government is expediting the process to get the Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy and detained in Sri Lankan custody, an Indian Minister has said on Saturday.
Minister of State in Prime Minister Office Jitendra Singh has said that the central government is expediting the process to get the fishermen released before the Diwali festival, PTI reported.
“It has been conveyed (to the Centre) that the process of getting their (fishermen) release has been expedited,” he told reporters at the airport in Chennai.
“Maybe we should get the good news before Diwali (festival),” he said to a query on when the release of Indian fishermen was expected.
The Sri Lankan government earlier this week said that all the 120 Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and detained in the country’s jails will be released soon.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on October 27 wrote to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to take immediate action to secure the release of the Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.
