Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene immediately over the issue of arrest of 14 Tamil Nadu fishermen and secure their expeditious release.
In a letter addressed to him, she stated that the frequent arrest of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka causes livelihood issues to the Tamil Nadu fishermen. The Central Government must take steps to resolve this issue permanently through diplomatic channels.
She also pointed out that the agreements between Sri Lanka and India signed in 1974 and 1976 are unconstitutional and they have taken away historic and traditional rights of Indian fishermen. They must therefore be revoked.
