The new Government has approved the Jaffna – Kilinochchi Water Supply Scheme, to be undertaken under ADB aid. The approval had been granted as a result of the request placed before the President in the last Northern Province coordinating Committee meeting, it is reported.
A water supply scheme to be undertaken by the ADB earlier at a cost of $160 million was later altered by the NPC. Instead of bringing water from Iranaimadu Tank, a new scheme to convert sea water into fresh water at Maruthankerny and supply it was proposed by NPC.
However the Government had suspended for reviewing all foreign aided projects. The water supply scheme also was included in this review. Hence it was also suspended for some time now.
The Chief Secretary of NP, Pathinathan requested the President directly to approve the above projects. As per his request approval had been granted to the project.
The ADB had allocated $390 million for this project. A high level ADB team had already met the CM and discussed about this project.
