A completely severed hand of a 4 year old had been joined together by Surgeons of the Jaffna Hospital after 12 hours surgery and restored to working order, said Dr.P.Srikrishnarajah.
A 4 year old child’s hand was severed completely by a concrete post falling on his hand. The severed part of the hand was wrapped in polythene , placed in ice and taken to Mannar Hospital with the patient. Later the patient was transferred to Jaffna Hospital.
After 12 hours of emergency surgery by the surgeons, the hand was completely joined together with the severed flesh, bones, veins and nerves successfully joined.
Two teams of doctors headed by Orthopaedic Surgeon, P.Sri Krishna, and Plastic Surgeon Vipula Perera, performed the operation, and the child was kept in the ward for 6 weeks, for treatment and observations. The operation had been 90% successful . Although two surgeries like this were attempted in JTH, they were not successful, he said.
