To date the Jaffna Teaching Hospital is operating without obtaining the compulsory Environmental License. Earlier the wastes from the hospital were taken to Pannai and after treating the waste they discharged into Pannai Sea.But the said treatment plant had broken down several months ago and the wastes are discharged direct into the sea without treating it said the officials of the Central Environment Authority in a discussion held at the Jaffna Hospital.
They further said that they have issued instructions three times within one year period to put right the treatment plant and to treat the waste before disposing it. As no action had been taken to date, legal had to be taken against the Jaffna Hospital.
They also pointed out that the solid wastes from the Hospital are being disposed at Kallundai with out any treatment and this also pose high health risks.
