Director of Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Sydney Professor Jake Lynch, has stressed the role of the International Community to press ahead with efforts to gather evidence for possible international criminal tribunals on genocide against Tamils in Sri Lanka.
He made this observation when The Tamil Diplomat asked for his reflections on the recent Genocide resolution passed by the Northern Provincial Council of Sri Lanka.
“The continuing oppression of the Tamil people cannot extinguish their right to freedom and to self-determination. The only way for peace with justice is through serious, substantive dialogue and negotiation to recognise them. The international community must play an active role in setting the conditions for that dialogue to take place. That means pressing ahead with efforts to gather evidence for possible war crimes tribunals, and serious consideration of the case that the Tamil people’s treatment in Sri Lanka amounts to genocide”. He said.
