Manivannan, a member of the Jaffna Municipality Council has sought the permission of his party to resign his membership at the Jaffna Municipal Council. However the Leader of the TNPF, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has said that they are in intensive consultations with their lawyers, regarding further action regarding this matter.
A media conference was held at the Head Office yesterday and Gajendrakumar said so in reply to media men’s questions regarding the interim injunction granted against Manivannan participation in the JMC’s meetings and voting.
Speaking further he said that the injunction on Manivannan is not a decision taken in accordance with the law. We have discussed with our lawyers regarding this. Until we take a decision we cannot make public the actions we are to take, he said.
However this interim Injunction will drag on till the case is completed. Manivannan has requested that that the vacancy that will be caused by his resignation be filled with another member of the party. We contested after making public about the contesting of Manivannan and lot of people have voted for him. While we respect Manivannan’s stance, we consider that it is not appropriate for him to resign his seat legally at this conjuncture.
The TNA had filed this case because Mannivannan proposed the Genocide Resolution. They could have filed this case in Jaffna. But they filed the case in Colombo because they expect to get a decision they want. We expect a decision soon, he said.
